Cattle
Pedigree Welsh Black Cattle breeding had been a passion since the late 1980s, and continues to be a mainstay of the business, together with a small commercial flock of sheep. The day-to-day management of the livestock is looked after by Margot, with really heavy work shared between the partners. “We do not count the hours spent with our cows. We have run a “closed herd” since about 1989, and all our cows and heifers are homebred. Bulls were purchased as we needed them, but we have also bred two exceptional bulls from our own stock, and they in turn have sired some of our best cows and heifers.” The herd spends the whole year out of doors and is extremely hardy.
Equally, they are well handled, calm and quiet and see us close up every day. We are members of the SAC cattle health scheme and are farm assured under the Farm Assured Welsh Livestock scheme.
Young stock are sold to interested parties on a regular basis, with young steers usually going on to be finished by other farmers at 12 months, and heifers being sold as 2year olds, as bulling heifers to pedigree breeders. Currently we have a number of excellent bulling heifers for sale, so please contact us if you are looking for well bred and hardy animals.
To complement the cattle and to graze after the cows, we also have a small flock of commercial ewes, which produce their lambs usually in February. All ewes lamb indoors and are turned out in a small sheltered paddock with their lambs before going onto the larger fields after about 10 days. All lambs are finished on the farm and are sold at an average weight of 16.5 kgs grading normally as U and R3ls.
We think that animal welfare is paramount and we look after our animals as best as we can.
